When talking about interpersonal communication, it is impossible to ignore the topic of forms of communication. They have an overriding influence on how effective the communication will be, as well as how to create messages that are understandable to the recipient. The basic division is the one between verbal and non-verbal communication. How do they differ and what are their basic features?

Verbal Communication

Otherwise – verbal communication is the foundation of our daily contact with other people. The basic element responsible for understanding the messages, in this case, is the language used by the sender and the recipient. To make the messages understandable, both parties must use the same language.

In the context of verbal communication, we talk about oral and written communication. Oral has an advantage over the written one because with it we usually also deal with non-verbal messages. Thanks to this, it provides a wider range of possibilities in terms of transmitting information and emotions. Unfortunately – it also has some disadvantages. They include, among others the need to quickly formulate thoughts, which may affect the order of sentences, mixing facts with opinions, or exaggerating certain issues.

Written communication, although devoid of non-verbal elements, is usually much more structured. The sender has more time to formulate thoughts or analyze the message received from the interlocutor. However, it has several drawbacks, such as the need to wait longer for an answer or the inability to express deeper emotions. Within the Internet, this problem was supposed to be solved by “emoticons”, but often, instead of helping, they complicate messages even more.

Nonverbal Communication

Although most people believe that verbal communication is by far the most important, the reality turns out to be a bit more complicated. It turns out that as much as 65% of our messages are non-verbal. Therefore, the awareness of this and the ability to use and read gestures in a conversation have a huge impact on the effectiveness of communication or understanding the intentions of the interlocutor.
